Top prospect Joel Embiid had surgery on the stress fracture in his right foot Friday, and now he waits. Chicago Bulls Jerseys . He waits to see how far he falls in the NBA draft Thursday night. He waits to see how long it will be before he can hit the court again. He waits to see how he responds to an injury that has a history of giving NBA big men problems. The Kansas centre, who was in the running to be taken No. 1 overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers, had two screws inserted into the navicular bone in his right foot at Southern California Orthopedic Institute, according to a release distributed by agent Arn Tellem. "The surgery went very well and Im confident that after appropriate healing he will be able to return to NBA basketball," said Dr. Richard Ferkel, who performed the surgery, said in the release. "Joel tolerated the surgery without difficulty and will begin his rehabilitation in the near future." While it is the same injury that Houston Rockets centre Yao Ming suffered twice and ultimately retired because of, its impossible to say how Embiid will recover this early in the process. Bill Walton also was slowed by the injury, but that was more than 30 years ago while Zydrunas Ilgauskas was able to make a full recovery from his broken navicular bone and resume a long and productive career. It is not immediately clear how long Embiid will be out, with estimations ranging from nine months to a full season depending on how the rehabilitation process goes. The lack of clarity has turned the top of the draft into a crapshoot. Kansas guard Andrew Wiggins and Duke forward Jabari Parker were the two names mentioned most often with Embiid at the top of the draft, with Australian point guard Dante Exum an intriguing, but largely unknown, long-shot possibility. A lithe and super-athletic 7-footer with nimble footwork and a soft shooting touch, Embiid has drawn comparisons to Hakeem Olajuwon and, after an impressive workout in front of NBA teams in California this month, seemed to be distancing himself from Wiggins and Parker in the eyes of many talent evaluators. But the Cavaliers passed on injured Kentucky big man Nerlens Noel with the No. 1 pick last year and are eager to get back into the playoffs after a four-year absence. So taking a chance on an injured Embiid may not be in their plans Thursday night and the Milwaukee Bucks, sitting at No. 2, could also use immediate help as they begin their first season under new ownership. That could drop Embiid to the Philadelphia 76ers, who are preaching patience in the second year of a massive tear-down and rebuild under GM Sam Hinkie. The Sixers acquired Noel, who was recovering from a torn ACL, on draft night last year and sat him out for the entire season. Could they take the same approach for a second straight season? Assuming a full recovery, an Embiid-Noel frontcourt with Michael Carter-Williams running the point could be a dynamic core to get the 76ers back to relevance in the wide open Eastern Conference. After the Sixers at No. 3, the Orlando Magic, Utah Jazz, Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers all wait in the wings. And so does Embiid. Tony Kukoc Jersey . Green scored a career-high 36 points, including eight in overtime, and the Phoenix Suns beat Denver 112-107 on Tuesday night to hand the Nuggets their fifth consecutive loss. The Winnipeg Jets will look to prevent the Minnesota Wild from clinching a playoff spot tonight at the MTS Centre. The game can be seen live regionally on TSN Jets and heard on TSN Radio 1290 starting at 6:30pm ct/7:30pm et. Forward Evander Kane, who was a healthy scratch Saturday night in Toronto, participated in the Jets morning skate today and will be back in the lineup tonight. "I was obviously disappointed but that was his decision and that was it," said Kane after the morning skate. Head coach Paul Maurice said it was a "coachs decision" to scratch the 22-year-old from the lineup. "Youll get no rationale from me. Youve seen me on TV before. Theres nothing rational out of my mouth," said Maurice after a 4-2 win against the Maple Leafs. Maurice also mentioned that Kane would have to "probably just come to the rink" to get back into the lineup. Last week, Kane was sued in British Columbia over an alleged assault from a incident in August 2013. Dustin Byfuglien will not play tonight and is done for the season with a torn muscle in his upper body. Winnipeg was recently eliminated from playoff contention, meaning the former Atlanta Thrashers franchise will miss the postseason for a seventh straight season. The Jets, however, did well in a spoiler role in their last game, recording a 4-2 home win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, a team currently fighting for its playoff lives in the Eastern Conference. Tobias Enstrom scored the game-winning goal late in the second period to help Winnipeg deal the Maple Leafs a costly setback. After Torontos Paul Ranger went off for holding Adam Pardy, the Jets took a 3-2 lead on the power play. Enstrom skated across the blue line and fired a shot past a screened James Reimer with 2:58 to go in the second. Bryan Little, Jacob Trouba, and Olli Jokinen also scored for the Jets, who have won two of their last three. Andrew Ladd, Michael Frolik and Blake Wheeler all supplied two helpers, while Ondrej Pavelec turned aside 23 shots in the win. "I thought it was a great effort, start to finish," said Ladd. The Jets are kickking off a two-game homestand tonight before capping their season Friday night in Calgary. Denzel Valentine Jersey. Winnipeg is 17-16-6 at MTS Centre. Minnesota won the first three encounters against the Jets this season before Winnipeg recorded a 6-4 home win in the last meeting on Dec. 27. That victory halted a four-game slide in the series for the Jets, who are 2-0-1 at home against the Wild since relocating from Atlanta prior to the 2011-12 season. The Wild had missed the postseason four straight times before returning to the tournament last spring, when they were knocked out in the first round by Chicago. With 92 points through 78 games, Minnesota is likely headed back to the playoffs in 2014. Minnesota holds the first of two wild card spots in the Western Conference and is five points ahead of idle Dallas. The Wild are six points in front of the Phoenix Coyotes, who also are idle on Monday. Like the Stars and Wild, Phoenix has four games left on its regular-season schedule. The Wild have won three of their last four games, going 3-0-1 during that stretch. The club picked up a 4-0 win in Saturdays home test against the Pittsburgh Penguins, as Ilya Bryzgalov stopped all 20 shots he faced for his third shutout of the season. It was Bryzgalovs second shutout since being traded from Edmonton to Minnesota last month. The veteran netminder is 5-0-3 with a sparkling 1.87 goals against average in nine appearances with the Wild since the trade. "They did a tremendous job," Bryzgalov said. "Im just trying to enjoy the hockey and help the team and help the guys like they helping me to get these points and help to win the games." Bryzgalov will get the call again on Monday and is 6-2-2 with a 2.88 GAA in 10 career games against the Jets. Erik Haula, Mikko Koivu and Stephane Veilleux tallied in a strong first period for the Wild on Saturday. Cody McCormick added the other tally and Charlie Coyle supplied two assists. The Wild, who are 16-17-7 as the road team, will complete their regular season with a three-game homestand at Xcel Energy Center. Minnesota will host Boston, St. Louis and Nashville during the stay in St. Paul. DETROIT -- With the Detroit Tigers in a jam after a close play at first base, Brad Ausmus calmly made his way onto the field. Ndamukong Suh Jersey . No histrionics from the rookie manager -- not in this situation at least. All he had to do was challenge the call and wait. "Its almost awkward when you go out there," Ausmus said. "Normally the manager would go out there to scream and yell, but it doesnt make sense to go out there and scream and yell if they know you have a challenge. In essence, Im really just taking my time getting out there so we can get a determination from our video room as to whether we should use the challenge." Baseballs new instant replay system was popular at Comerica Park on Wednesday, when two calls at first base were overturned in Detroits favour. The second reversal ended a Kansas City rally in the 10th, and the Tigers eventually won 2-1 on Ian Kinslers single in the bottom of the inning. Kinsler also hit a solo homer in the fourth, helping Detroit win despite a blown save by new closer Joe Nathan. Max Scherzer pitched eight scoreless innings for the Tigers. "All I kept thinking about was picking up Max. He was so good all game and you dont want to waste that kind of performance," said Kinsler, who was acquired from Texas for Prince Fielder in a November trade. "It was great for Joe, too. We know hes a great closer, but it is a lot easier to forget about a bad outing when your team wins the game." In the top of the 10th, Kansas Citys Norichika Aoki was called safe at first, and it looked like the Royals would have first and third with two outs against Al Alburquerque (1-0). But upon further review, the throw barely beat Aoki. He was called out to end the threat. There was another overturn in the sixth when Detroits Tyler Collins was initially called out at first, giving Kansas City a 4-6-3 double play. The play was reviewed and Collins was ruled safe, although Detroit didnt score. "Thats exactly why the system is there -- to get the call right," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "Both calls went against us, but they were the right calls, so I dont have any problem with it." Scherzer allowed four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts, but Nathan blew a save at Comerica for the first time after 19 straight as a visitor. Alex Gordons bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the ninth tied it, and Nathan balked the runners ahead when he pulled up in the middle of his motion. Nathan said afterward he stopped because he wasnt sure he and catcher Alex Avila were on the same page. "I just didnt want to cross him up," Nathan said. "I thought I saw a fastball in, and when I came up to my balance position and looked in, I saw him setting up away." After Alburquerque made it through the 10th, Austin Jackson and Nick Castellanos both walked for Detroit. Kinsler won it with a two-out single to left-centre off Tim Collins (0-1). Scherzer can become a free agent after this season, and if he keeps pitching like this hell be in line for quite a payday. The American League Cy Young Award winner mostly cruised until the eighth, when Salvador Perez doubled leading off. Scherzer rebounded to strike out Mike Moustakas and Lorenzo Cain. Ausmus then visited the mound, but he left Scherzer in. Alcides Escobar followed with a flyout on Scherzers 110th and final pitch. Scherzer said Ausmus told him to make a decision about staying in. "I said, Give me a second to think about it," Scherzer said. "I needed to be honest with Brad. I said, Give me the ball." Jason Vargas, who signed a $32 million, four-year contract in the off-season, was sharp in his first start for Kansas City. On Thursday theyll learn even more. Despite the cloud of uncertainty that has followed them around from the moment general manager Masai Ujiri was brought in to put his stamp on the franchise, the Raptors have surpassed all pre-season expectations. Its obvious Maurice Mann is no fan of feel-good movies. The script had been followed to the letter. After a successful career in the CFL, Mann won the 100th Grey Cup at home in his final game, then walked off the field for the final time as a champion. With a plot twist worthy of The Usual Suspects, the 32-year old receiver has decided to re-shoot the final scene and return to action. Hell suit up for the Toronto Argonauts Saturday night in Regina for a game against the Roughriders. How did this happen? It started out when the receiver was spotted by the staff at recent Argo home games. "They saw me at a few of the games and said Mo, you look good, you look to be in shape" Mann told TSN 1050. "I said I am in shape, coach. So when the injury bug hit, I was there and sent an e-mail or two." Head coach Scott Milanovich says it was general manager Jim Barkers brainwave to bring back the six-year veteran. "It was Jims idea a couple of weeks ago when we started having injuries," Milanovich told TSN 1050. "It made a lot of sense to me and you almost question yourself why hasnt Mo been around? Hes been great, you just hope he can keep his wind up. Hes been staying in great shape and I expect hell play well." The coach is happy with what hes seen at practice. "He looks good," continued Milanovich. "It looks like he hasnt missed a beat. He looks like hes been through training camp and hes running well, hes catching the ball well. Weve been moving him around position-wise trying to fit him in where we may need the help and thats probably been the challenge for him, is having us give him a definitive position that hes going to be in." Mann is listed on the depth chart as the x position, or the wide receiver on the boundary side. He has moved around during the week and will likely move inside on ooccasion. John Franklin-Myers Rams Jersey. John Chiles, who is usually in that spot, made the trip, but is a game-time decision with a leg injury. If Chiles cant go, hell join Chad Owens, Jason Barnes and Andre Durie on the sidelines, meaning the Argos would be down four quality starting receivers. Perhaps the best person to ask about the progress of Mann is quarterback Ricky Ray, who played with the receiver not only during the Grey Cup run in Toronto, but for three seasons in Edmonton. "Weve had the injury bug, its nice to have a guy youre familiar with coming back into the lineup," said Ray. "The good thing is that he has a good basis for the terminology in the offence that were doing and obviously, we have a lot of game experience together, so for me, I feel pretty comfortable with having him out there and we have a lot of past experiences to build off of." Mann is comfortable with the offence and the terminology, but admits a lot has changed in the last year and four games. "Scott (Milanovich) is a mad scientist," joked the receiver. "Even though Marcus (offensive coordinator Marcus Brady) is running it, theres a lot of new things in terms of the offence, but its pretty similar and Im pretty comfortable already because I have a great teacher in (receivers coach) Jason Maas, who is keeping me seven hours after practice to learn everything possible about what I need to see, and where I have to be." Seeing Mann in double blue will evoke memories of the Argos 31-26 win over the Riders in Regina in 2012, the game most point to as the turning point in their championship season. On that day, the Seaside, California native hauled in seven passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. Repeating those numbers would be a long shot at best, but with his return to the lineup, Mann has demonstrated that nothing is impossible.
