After a slow start, the Belgians took advantage of a Swedish defensive mistake that allowed Axel Witsel to set up the Everton striker in the 34th minute. Hazard easily rolled in the second goal in the 78th from a pass by Kevin De Bruyne. "In the first 10 minutes of the match I felt we were a bit hesitant, they played a bit soft," Belgium coach Marc Wilmots said about his team. "Then they got five to six opportunities and they found a solution to get into the game." Sweden, which played without injured star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, had its best chance in the 68th minute when Jimmy Durmaz hit the crossbar after a corner. Ibrahimovic decided to sit out the game just before the start citing back problems. Expectations are high on Belgiums young team, wiith stars like Lukaku, Hazard and Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany, ahead of the World Cup. Curry 1 Shoes Online. . Hazard said the atmosphere in the team is good ahead of the tournament. "There are always things to work on but I think at the end of the day we kept a clean sheet and I think except for the first 15 minutes the organization of the team was good," he said. LOS ANGELES -- A judge refused Friday to immediately release former NFL All-Pro safety Darren Sharper from jail in a Los Angeles rape case but said she would have to free him soon if charges arent filed in a similar case in Louisiana. TreQuan Smith Jersey . The ruling came after lawyers for Sharper argued that he had been freed on $1 million bail and pleaded not guilty in the Los Angeles case but was jailed again after an arrest warrant was issued last week in Louisiana. "To hold him into perpetuity on an arrest warrant seems to be grotesquely unfair," Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Renee Korn said. The judge set a hearing for Thursday to give Louisiana prosecutors time to charge Sharper or for that states governor to seek his return through another type of warrant. It was the latest development in several ongoing sexual assault investigations involving the 38-year-old Sharper in Louisiana, California, Florida, Arizona and Nevada. In a bail motion filed last month, Los Angeles County Investigator John Maccharella described a pattern in which the former football star met women at clubs or parties and lured them to a hotel room, where they were allegedly drugged and raped. The New Orleans warrant says police learned from witnesses that Sharper and associate Erik Nunez had acknowledged having nonconsensual sex with two women. It does not elaborate on how the information was obtained or disclose the names of the witnesses. "Through further investigation by the detectives it was learned that Nunez and Sharper admitted to other known witnesses that he and Sharper had vaginal and/or oral sex with victims .1 and .2 without their knowledge or permission," the warrant states. Sharpers attorneys say he never made such statements and the arrest warrant was a pretext to hold him indefinitely without bail. Prosecutors, however, said they were following the law. Chris Bowman, a spokesman for New Orleans District Attorney Leon A. Cannizzaro Jr., said he could not comment on whether Sharper would be charged before the Thursday deadline set by Judge Korn. "Its an open investigation," Bowman said. "Im not going to comment on it. Im not going to put a timetable on it." In Los Angeles, Deputy District Attorney Javan Wygal said it would be difficult for Louisiana authorities to prosecute Sharper because under the laws of that state, the case there would expire within four months if Sharper isnt tried. Sharper was selected All-Pro six times and chosen for the Pro Bowl five times. He played in two Super Bowls, one with the Green Bay Packers as a rookie and was part of a successful championship run while with the New Orleans Saints. He retired after the 2010 season and was working as an analyst for the NFL Network before being fired last week. Leonard Levine, a lawyer for Sharper in Los Angeles, has said Sharper will be cleared in the cases. "All of these were consensual contact between Mr. Sharper and women who wanted to be in his company," Levine said after a court hearing last month. Nunez, a waiter, has been arrested in New Orleans, where a judge on Friday set his bail at $400,000. His lawyer Herbert Larson said prosecutors only had hearsay evidence against his client. Court documents in Los Angeles state that Sharper has submitted DNA samples to New Orleans police and agreed to turn himself in there if he is charged. Nunez also submitted DNA in the case, Larson said, adding that his client is not a flight risk. Sharper had been released on bail in Los Angeles on the condition that he remain in the city, stay away from nightclubs and not be alone with any woman he did not know before October, when the first allegations emerged. His attorneys contend he did not violate any of those terms before turning himself in after the Louisiana warrant was issued. Pat Swilling Jersey . Montario Hardesty was placed on injured reserve Tuesday with a knee injury, the latest medical setback for the former third-round pick whose promising NFL career has been sabotaged by injuries. The move with Hardesty came one day after the Browns put running back Dion Lewis on season-ending injured reserve with a surgically repaired left leg. The loss of Hardesty and Lewis hurts Clevelands depth and may force the Browns to sign a player before the Sept. 8 season opener. Lewis was supposed to be the change-of-pace back behind starter Trent Richardson. Lewis had passed Hardesty on the depth chart during training camp, and now Cleveland will be without both players in 2013. Also, the Browns released fullback Owen Marecic, a fourth-round pick in 2011, as they trimmed their roster to 75 by the leagues 4 p.m. deadline. Teams must have their active rosters to 53 players by 6 p.m. on Saturday. In addition, the Browns were awarded linebacker Paul Hazel from Jacksonville and punter Colton Schmidt from San Francisco. The Browns also waived linebacker Kendrick Adams, offensive lineman Dominic Alford, wide receiver Dominique Croom, defensive lineman Nicolas Jean-Baptiste, offensive lineman Ryan Miller and tight end Travis Tannahill. Miller sustained a concussion during the first week of training camp. Miller was knocked out during a blocking drill, and had to be carried off the field on a stretcher. He entered the leagues concussion protocol program before being cut. Rookie offensive lineman Chris Faulk was also placed on the reserve/non-football injury list. He is also done for the year. Hardesty was slowed by a hamstring injury during training camp and returned to ppractice a few weeks ago only to dislocate his right thumb while trying to catch a direct snap from centre. Sammy Knight Jersey. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee on Aug. 15. Hardesty missed his rookie season in 2010 after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in the final exhibition game. He sat out part of 2011 with a calf injury, but was healthy last season and rushed for 271 yards and a touchdown in 12 games. Hardesty showed good explosiveness on several runs and the Browns were encouraged that he was able to stay healthy. Now, his career could be in jeopardy since hes going to miss another full season. If he does return, it could be with another team since hes in the final year of his contract with Cleveland. Marecic made six starts over two seasons for the Browns, who selected the former Stanford standout after acquiring the No. 124 overall pick in the draft-day trade with Atlanta. The Falcons sent the Browns five picks to move up and select wide receiver Julio Jones. Marecic lost his job as Clevelands primary fullback this summer to Chris Ogbonnaya, who converted from tailback. DAVIE, Fla. Cheap Shoes Replica . - Heres a list of Miami Dolphins coaches who never won a game by 37 points or more:Jimmy Johnson. Nick Saban. Tony Sparano. Dave Wannstedt. Cam Cameron. Todd Bowles. Jim Bates. George Wilson. Now Joe Philbin has done it. One day after a stunning 37-0 victory over San Diego, Philbin offered this message: Dont get used to it.We cant anticipate were going to shut out our next eight opponents, Philbin said Monday. Thats not real life in the National Football League. And its hard to average 37 points a game in the NFL over an eight-game stretch. Were going to have to find new ways to win, and just keep improving. The Dolphins improved to 5-3 with their most lopsided victory since 1995, when Don Shula was still in charge. That was eight coaches ago. After 2 1/2 years in Miami, Philbin is at .500 (20-20), his job future beyond this season still uncertain. But with three consecutive victories, Philbin is on the verge of a breakthrough, because he has never had a team win four in a row.A lack of sustained success is one reason Miami hasnt been to the playoffs since 2008.The Dolphins won three in a row in 2012, Philbins first season, then lost three in a row. They enjoyed a 3-0 start in 2013, then lost the next four. They won three in a row last December, then endured a late-season meltdown and lost their final two games. How will this team handle success? Its a good question, Philbin said. Its one weve got to answer. The win over San Diego was an emotional one, with Philbin receiving a game ball from owner Stephen Ross. The coach missed two days of practice last week to be with his father, who died Friday, and Philbin will be absent again Tuesday and Wednesday to attend the funeral. When it comes to the more mundane matter of wins and losses, Philbin appears to have things headed in the right direction. Were a better team today than we were Oct. 1, or than we were in September, Philbin said. The challenge every week is to find ways to improve.Miami is an underdog Sunday at NFC North leader Detroit (6-2), and still off the radar with many playoff prognosticators. Receiver Mike Wallace said hed prefer the rest of the league not take note of the latest win.Hopefully not, so we can do the same thing next week, Wallace said. Hopefully, nobody ever catches on. Hopefully, people just keep taking us easy, so we come away with wins like this. The Dolphins look like more than one-game wonders. For the first time since 1997, theyve scored at least 24 points in five consecutive games, according to STATS. Theyve outscored opponents during that span 153-68. The lone loss during that stretch came in the final seconds against Green Bay, leaving them one play from a five-game winning streak.Midway through his third season, Ryan Tannehill is blossoming at quarterback. He ranks only 28th in the league in yards per attempt, but over past five games he has completed 68 per cent of his attempts while averaging 8.2 yards per pass, with a rating of 104.1.Meanwhile, the defence leads NFL in yards allowed per play, yards allowed per pass and first downs. Miami ranks second in pass defence, third in total defence and fourth in rushing.Nows not the time to savour statistics, defensive co-ordinator Kevin Coyle said. Were only halfway through, he said. You look down the road, weve got a few dicey ones on the horizon. The next three games are against teams who are a combined 17-7. The Dolphins might just be built for the challenge.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL___Follow Steven Wine on Twitter: http://twitter.com/Steve_WineCheap Shoes Website . EDMONTON - Henrik Lundqvist didnt have to do much for his fifth shutout of the season. Authentic Vapormax Shoes . Lundqvist only needed to make 16 saves as the Rangers won their third game in a row, defeating the Edmonton Oilers 2-0 on Sunday. It was not a very tough game for me, but they had a few chances here and there, Lundqvist said. We were patient. We felt like they were playing not to make any mistakes and were staying back. They were waiting for us to make mistakes so that they could counter. But we did a good job of playing a smart hockey game. We just stuck with the game plan and let our chances come to us. I thought we were the better team the whole game, but at the same time it was still a one-goal game for most of it.Dan Girardi and Carl Hagelin scored for the Rangers (14-10-4), who have picked up victories in five of their past seven games. The Rangers played on back-to-back nights with Lundqvist getting the start in both. The Swedish netminder said he was eager to get back into the net so soon after Saturdays 5-1 win over the Canucks in Vancouver. It feels the last couple weeks I havent played much, so I was happy when they told me I was going in again, he said. It was one of those, it looked like a game where youre watching paint dry. Both teams were being fairly responsible. The Rangers a few years ago took on that mentality of shot blocking where nothing was ever going to get through. It seemed like they were able to block a ton of shots and we werent able to get them through. The Rangers went up 1-0 with four minutes left to play in the opening period as a Girardi pass through the crease hit the skate of Oiler Mark Arcobello and went straight into the net past Edmonton starter Ben Scrivens. It was the 21st time in 31 games the Oilers allowed the first goal of the game. The Rangers had seven first-period shots to Edmontons five.New York had the bulk of the Grade A chances in the second period, but Scrivens was solid to keep his team in it. He was lucky once when Mats Zuccarello shot a puck over the net, but also came across the crease to make a huge pad save on a Ryan McDonagh rebound late in the period.Despite a limited amount of action around his net, Lundqvist did make a point-blank save on Oilers defender Jeff Petry with four minutes to play in the middle frame to keep his team ahead. The shots favoured the Rangers by a 15-10 margin after 40 minutes.Lundqvist bailed out his defenders with another big save in close on Taylor Hall with six-and-a-half minutes remaining in the third period.Edmonton pulled Scrivens in the late stages, but it worked against them as Hagelin scored an empty-net goal. Both teams return to action on Tuesday as the Rangers travel to Calgary to face the Flames and the Oilers begin a two-game road swing against the Arizona Coyotes.Notes: It was the second of two games between the two teams this season. BEREA, Ohio -- Michael Sam was laughing with teammates as they conducted a running-back drill for kids, each youngster stiff-arming and juking his way to a touchdown celebration dance in a makeshift end zone. Sam didnt stand out. He was just another rookie, simply one of the guys. The NFLs first openly gay active player, Sams first months in the league have gone just as he would have hoped. "Its very positive, its very fun," Sam said. "Im excited to be playing for the Rams, Im excited to be in the NFL." Sam was in town with the other NFC rookies, who took part in a PLAY 60 youth football clinic with local children at the Browns training complex, part of the leagues four-day rookie symposium. The AFC rookies will begin their symposium on Wednesday. The full orientation for the players includes presentations, workshops and speakers covering a broad range of topics that fit under four core teaching principles: NFL History, Total Wellness, Professional Experience and, yes, Workplace Conduct. But workplace conduct -- that is, experiencing workplace respect and maintaining positive relationships, two main outlined elements of the symposium -- hasnt been a problem for Sam. Not with his teammates and not among the other rookies. Its obvious he has the respect of those around him. "You dont see anyone not talking to him or against him," said guard Greg Robinson, Sams teammate in St. Louis and the second overall pick in Aprils draft. "They look at him as a football player." That doesnt mean Sam has to shy away from who he is, though. In a group meeting during the symposium, he was able to share some thoughts on his own life with teammates and rookies from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "Just know someones story before you judge them. Thats pretty much what it comes down to," said Tampa Bay wide receiver Mike Evans. "Hes a normal guy, just like us. Vapormax For Sale. Just here to play football." Sam is also quickly becoming known for his sense of humour. "The Rams love him," Evans said. "They always joke around with him. He seems like a fun-loving guy." And like any rookie, he is adjusting to the stark contrasts between the college and professional game. Sam was the SECs Co-Defensive Player Of The Year last season and was taken with the 249th overall pick in the seventh round of the draft, but he is working hard to carve out a role on a loaded Rams defensive line, led by ends Chris Long and Robert Quinn, who was second in the NFL in sacks last season. He has also been finding work on special teams. "Its every fast. Everything is full speed," Sam said. "If you make a mistake, it could cost you that win in practice or that win in a game. That one mistake. So youve got to pay attention to details." As for the details that have followed Sam around since he came out to the media in February, they havent mattered to anyone in the league, especially those who have met him. "Hes just another guy in the locker room," Robinson said. "Hes really cool once you get to know him and I feel like he has a great story behind him." That story has resulted in a whirlwind year for Sam, without much time to reflect on the fact that he is finally an NFL player. Its a lifelong goal that made him not unlike every player on the field Tuesday, having fun with kids eager to show off their quick feet or sure hands. "It still hasnt hit me yet, its still like a dream," Sam said. And as he continues to cross through uncharted territory, there is still that one vital, important thing to keep in mind. The thing that truly makes Sams experience a worthwhile success. "They treat me like a rookie," he said. ' ' '
NEW YORK -- The Brooklyn Nets reached an agreement in principle Wednesday with Lionel Hollins to become their coach, moving quickly after the departure of Jason Kidd. Will Harris Jersey . The deal with the former Memphis Grizzlies coach comes two days after the Nets made a trade with Milwaukee to allow Kidd out of his contract so the Bucks could hire him. Nets general manager Billy King and his assistants then met with Hollins on Monday night and again Tuesday before agreeing to the deal. Terms were not disclosed. "I want to thank the Nets ownership and Billy for this opportunity," Hollins said in a statement. "It has been a long process to get back into the league, and I believe that Billy and I will have a very successful working relationship. Brooklyn has firmly established itself as a franchise that is committed to winning, and I eagerly look forward to becoming part of that culture and building on the success of the past two playoff appearances." The Nets will introduce Hollins at a press conference Monday. Hollins led Memphis to 56 victories and the 2013 Western Conference finals before he and the Grizzlies parted ways. The Nets considered him last year after firing P.J. Carlesimo before hiring Kidd. He was the only known candidate the Nets interviewed this time. King said he had reached out to one other person who chose not to pursue the job. "If you look at (his) track record and what he did in Memphis, he was able to go in there and take a team, added some veterans and they continually got better," King said Tuesday. "He developed some young guys, (Marc) Gasol, some big guys. If you look at Memphis, they got consistently got better every year. All the way to the Western Conference finals." Kidd led Brooklyn to a 44-38 record and the second round of the playoffs in his lone season but the Nets allowed him to pursue other jobs after denying his request for more power within the organization. The Bucks held Kidds welcoming press conference earlier Wednesday. Hollins is known as a strong defensive coach, with the Grizzlies holding opponents to an NBA-low 89.3 points per game in his final season. He is the franchises career leader in wins and led them to three straight playoff appearances. He takes over a veteran team in Brooklyn that could easily fit his style of play if Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce return, and Brook Lopez and Deron Williams come back healthy after surgeries. Hollins went 214-201 with the Grizzlies and improved the teams record in each of his four full seasons, from 40 wins in 2009-10 to 56-26 in his final season. Memphis upset top-seeded San Antonio in the first round of the 2011 playoffs. But the Grizzlies came under new ownership and management during his final season, and they chose not to renew Hollins contract after they were swept by the Spurs in the conference finals. Hernandez is in a jail in Bristol County in southern Massachusetts, where he is charged in the 2013 shooting of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd. His lawyers want him moved to a jail closer to Boston, where Hernandez is charged in the 2012 killings of two men. He has pleaded not guilty in both cases. Bristol prosecutors said Thursday they dont oppose Hernandezs "wholly reasonable" request to be closer to his lawyers but called the defences other claims "baseless, theatrical, and legally unsupportable." Ayovi scored in the 2nd and 9th minutes as Tijuana claimed a 4-3 aggregate win over the two legs of the quarterfinals. Argentine striker Dario Benedetto added a goal in the 26th minute and Richard Ruiz lengthened the lead in the 80th for Tijuana. Robbie Keane scored off an Omar Gonzalez pass in the 46th minute and found the net again in 84th for the Galaxy. Tijuana, playing for the first time in the regions top club tournament, will play either Sporting Kansas City or Mexico City-based Cruz Azul in the semifinals. The Mexicans started strong and took the lead when Argentine Christian Pelleranos shot inside the boox was deflected by goalkeeper Jaime Penedo and the rebound fell to Ayovi, who scored from two meters (yards). Jay Vincent Jersey. Ayovi got his second goal off a long cross from Pellerano and dribbled the ball past Penedo before finishing finished with a soft touch. Tijuana*s third goal came when Benedetto stole the ball from Brazilian defender Leonardo Da Silva and scored with a powerful shot to the right post of the goalkeeper Penedo. The Galaxy drew one back when Landon Donovan sent a cross inside the box to Gonzalez, who headed the ball to Keane for the goal. Ruiz made it 3-1 with a powerful strike inside the box, but Keane scored again to keep the Galaxy in touch. The Galaxy pushed for a third goal that would have been enough to advance on aggregate, but the Tijuana defence held on for the win. ' ' '
Brad Richards looked to be on his way out of New York in 2013, when former Rangers coach John Tortorella not only demoted the veteran centre but scratched him in the playoffs. Kyler Fackrell Jersey . A year later, coach Alain Vigneault started down the same path by putting the 34-year-old on left wing of the Rangers fourth line in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup final. Richards played just nine minutes 22 seconds at even strength and a total of 13:20 including power-play time. Vigneault said he met with his lines individually, including Richards, Brian Boyle and Derek Dorsett. He wanted to spell out his reasoning and assignments. "I talked to Brads line. I talked to Brad about the decision I made," Vigneault said Wednesday night after the Rangers 2-1 victory that staved off elimination. "I mean, at this time of the year its only about one thing: Its about the team. You guys know how Richards has been this year, the ultimate pro. Hes fine with whatever I do." Richards, a strong candidate to be bought out of the final six years and US$27 million left on his contract, has no points in the Cup final and just four goals and four assists in 23 games since a strong opener against the Philadelphia Flyers. Vigneault said his line shuffling had to do with giving forward Dominic Moore a bigger role. As a result, though, he put Richards in a tough spot to be effective on a checking fourth line. Richards skated just 13 shifts. The 34-year-old managed a couple of quality scoring chances on the power play and was on the ice for a strong five-on-five shift that ended with a Kings penalty. Still, though, longtime friend Martin St. Louis knows what a demotion can mean to any star players ego. Richards was once a Canadian Olympian and 90-point scorer in the NHL. "Richies a pro and a tremendous leader," St. Louis said. "Im sure its tough for him. Hes a pro and a great teammate." Richards isnt expected to be a teammate of St. Louis for much longer. The Rangers have one more compliance buyout to use and just one more off-season window in which to use it, and these playoffs have done little to dispel the notion that hell be playing elsewhere next season. The Grizzlies erased most of a 25-point deficit before Durant, the leagues scoring champion, got hot. With the NBA Free Agency period beginning midnight on July 1st, many teams were out pitching their benefits to potential players. Sean Francois, (@seanfrancois) Halifax-based writer and co-founder of basketball blog HoopHeadsNorth.com, signs up for the Three-Man Weave this week with Duane Watson and Will Strickland from TSN 1050s "1 On 1 With Will & Duane", as we look at where some of the stars may land and asses the early activity. How important was the Kyle Lowry signing for Toronto? Strickland: Rhetorical. It would have been a nuclear winter in the T-Dot had Raptors President and GM Masai Ujiri not re-signed Lowry. DeMar DeRozan is the the best player on the team and an All-Star; Kyle Lowry is the MVP of the Raps. This is not necessarily up for debate.Francois: I believe that Kyle Lowrys signing is a BIG deal. The fact of the matter is that he re-signed with a Toronto team that had success this past season and has a bright future with a young core, so hes envisioning what he can do to help take the Raptors to the next level as a leader and key contributor. The Raptors franchise as a whole (players and management) cannot afford to rest on their laurels though. They must continue to improve individually as players, and management and coaches need to continually look for ways to improve the team in order to maintain and exceed this new found level of success on the court. To me, Lowrys re-signing helps quell the notion/misconception that players dont want to play in Toronto. Like in the heyday of the Vince Carter-era, if the team is winning, players will want to stay. Watson: After drafting and developing the likes of Tracy McGrady, Vince Carter and Chris Bosh, only to head south of the border once their game blossomed, it was important for the franchise to keep their own talent. Definitely a statement that Toronto is a destination for free agents, as Lowry drew interest from Miami, Houston and the Lakers. It was the right deal and he is the leader of the ball club and Masai Ujiri didnt have to overpay to keep him here. Will the Heat be able to retain their Big Three and improve their roster? Strickland: Tough to say at this point. LeBron James has been flying solo on this mission, rightfully demanding max money as for the first 11 years of his career, never has he been the highest paid player in the NBA or on his own team. Bosh opted out, then asked for a five-year, $90 million deal, which definitely wont happen in Miami. Dwyane Wade opted out and seems to be willing to do whats necessary to retire on South Beach. All that said, Pat Riley needs to bring in a Pau Gasol-type big, a solid PG and a competent bench with a mixture of youth and experience or we may have seen the last of the Heatles.Francois: I believe that the Miami Heat will be able to retain their Big Three, but only for another one or two seasons. With the reported contract demands/expectations from LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, I do not anticipate there being enough money available (under the salary cap) for Pat Riley to bring in significant pieces to placate James for the long haul. Therefore, I suspect LeBron will stay in Miami, but on a short term deal so that he has flexibility to go elsewhere in short order if he sees fit to do so. Watson: The numbers dont add up, LeBron James maintains he wants a max contract, deservedly so, but expects Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade to take less than their value AND are expected to find key players to add to the roster? Its not going to happen and I dont see James staying to play with the same team again, even with a max deal.Where will LeBron James end up? Strickland: The initial feeling is that if Riley cant work magic with record cap space available, The King signs a one-year tender and starts the process again next July. Other options include Cleveland and Houston having the inside track to sign LeBron. There are long shots like Chicago and Dallas, an intriguing scenario in the Valley of the Sun that involves James and Carmelo Anthony in Phoenix and the most explosive of all - Miami and the Clippers do a straight sign-and-trade with LeBron for Blake Griffin. Francois:I believe LeBron James will ultimately stay in Miami, but on a short-term deal so that he has the flexibility to go elsewhere in short order if he doesnnt believe the Miami Heat can continue to build and maintain a competitive roster. David Whitehurst Jersey. Pat Riley will need to work some magic to be able to attain players that can truly keep the Heat competitive and at a Championship-calibre level, considering the high percentage of cap space that the Big Three will command - even if it is at a "reduced" rate. Watson: LeBron leaves Miami unless he takes a short-term contract to stay, say, one or two years. When he does, it only makes sense that he returns to Cleveland. If hes going to leave the comfort and stability of the Heat, it would only make sense to do so if he returned home. They have young and dynamic pieces in Kyrie Irving, Andrew Wiggins, Tristan Thompson, etc, which is already a better Cavaliers team that he took to the NBA Finals in 2007.Where will Carmelo Anthony end up? Strickland: History speaks to Melo being about his money and max dollars exist by staying in Metropolis, learning the Triangle with ghost coach Phil Jackson (Sorry, Derek Fisher...we know what this is!), then waiting on Kevin Love and/or LeBron to show up in Gotham for the 2015-2016 season. Chicago seems like a fit for a better opportunity to win now, even with the unknown of Derrick Rose and his health. Houston and Dallas feel like gratuity stops on Melos Wine & Dine Tour 2014. And the writing was on the wall when Kobe couldnt make it back from his annual blood spinn... ahem, pardon me, "vacation in Europe" to meet with Anthony. Francois: I would enjoy seeing Carmelo Anthony in a Chicago Bulls uniform, but I do expect now that hes finished speaking with the Bulls, Mavericks, Rockets, Lakers and the Knicks that he will ultimately stay where hes been for the past three-and-a-half seasons. I feel that the maximum money that the Knicks can offer, which no other team can (and the fifth-year on a contract), plus his wife and family being settled in New York City and enjoying everything the city has to offer, will ultimately keep him in the Big Apple. Watson: The best scenario is for him to wind up in is Chicago, with a defensive-minded coach and a complement of stars in Joakim Noah, Derrick Rose and defensive pieces like Jimmy Butler and Taj Gibson, however it will likely be the most complicated. Melo can get max money in New York if he stays, but he wants to win. Can he attract a marquee free agent to come play with him there, knowing he wont pass the ball? I think he will opt for the long money (five-year max deal) and stay in New York.Which free agency move thus far, quietly makes their team better? Strickland: Toronto. Ujiris continues to be solid and respectful of the cap dynamic, fan dynamic and team growth dynamic by re-upping Kyle Lowry to a very reasonable deal for a player of his calibre. With a 2017 lockout looming and, as usual, Washington D.C. affecting the current economy by grossly overpaying Wizards centre Marcin "The Polish Hammer" Gortat, the Raptors are building in a fiscally responsible fashion that should engender confidence for Ujiris next moves. Francois: With a lot of free agents still unsigned or undecided on their team for the upcoming 2014-15 season, the answer to the most underrated free agent signing is probably still to come. That said, to answer the specific question of what free agent signing has quietly made their team better, I believe the Spurs re-signing of Patty Mills is very key. Unfortunately, he now has to recover from rotator cuff surgery, but a lot of teams certainly had him on their radar for his shooting prowess and point guard abilities. This helps keep the San Antonio Spurs core and group of impactful role players intact, while giving the Spurs a fantastic opportunity to keep the Larry OBrien Trophy in their possession. Watson: While none of the big names has signed yet, Lowry is the biggest name to lock up, but that has already been addressed. Danny Ferrys Atlanta Hawks traded Lou Williams and Lucas Nogueira to the Raptors for John Salmons, who they will likely waive for $1 million providing cap space. They also acquired Thabo Sefolosha for three years and $12 million, who provides solid perimeter defence to platoon with Kyle Korver, the leagues best three-point shooter. The cap space may also pave way for Luol Deng to sign with the Hawks, as well. ' ' '
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens are still adjusting to NHL play after a nearly three-week Olympic layoff. Marcus Nilson Jersey . And it showed Thursday night. The Canadiens, playing in their second game in as many days, however, got a good performance in the end from their backup goaltender as he filled in for an injured Olympic gold medallist . Peter Budaj stopped all three shooters in the shootout and David Desharnais scored the only goal, leading the Canadiens to a wild 6-5 victory. "He battled back in the second and third and in the shootout he was outstanding," Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said of Budaj. Budaj, in his second straight start for injured starter Carey Price, stopped Penguins shooters James Neal and Sidney Crosby before denying Evgeni Malkins slap shot for the win. Desharnais, the third shooter for Montreal, slammed on the brakes at the top of the crease before sliding the puck by Marc-Andre Fleury. "I would like to have some goals back, but we scored five goals against Pittsburgh," Budaj said. "We have to learn from the mistakes we made. We have to keep going and getting better." Daniel Briere scored twice, once on the power play, and Max Pacioretty also scored with the man advantage, his 27th of the year. Brendan Gallagher netted his 15th for the Canadiens and Alexei Emelin also scored his second of the season. Budaj, who stopped 27 shots, made his second straight start after turning aside 28 shots during an overtime loss one day earlier against Detroit. "You can tell the bench guys wanted to battle back for him because he certainly worked hard," Therrien said. He filled in for Price, who was named the top goaltender at the Olympic games after going 5-0 with a 0.59 goals-against average and two shutouts, leading Team Canada to a gold medal. Price, who aggravated a lower-body injury sustained in Sochi, will be re-evaluated Friday. "Credit to the team because they stuck with it, they battled for me and we got the two points," Budaj said. Crosby, who leads the NHL with 80 points, scored his 29th and added an assist. Neal scored his 21st for his 300th career point and also had an assist, while Malkin provided two assists, both extending six-game point streaks. Olli Maatta scored his seventh of the season on the power play and had an assist, while Brandon Sutter had a short-handed goal, his 10th of the year. Deryk Engelland also scored his career-high fifth goal. "We worked hard," Crosby said. "It was a little sloppy, and a lot of special teams. ... Probably a tough first one for everybody to get into." The teams were tied at 3 after two periods and both scored twice in the third, sending the game to overtime. Three of the four third-period goals were scored by special teams units, Sutter giving the Penguins a 4-3 lead with a short-handed breakaway goal and Crosby later putting Pittsburgh ahead 5-4 on the power play. Emelin tied it 24 seconds after Sutter gave the Penguins the initial lead and Briere sent the game to overtime with his second goal of the game. With the Canadiens trailing, the Penguins Tanner Glass was issued a five-minute major for a hit on Emelin. The call was elbowing, but video replays showed Emelins stick came up and hit him in the head. "Thats why I kind of followed through the way I did, to get his stick away from my face," Glass said. "Its a hockey play, it happens. I can understand why he made the call." The Canadiens cashed in anyway, Briere tying it with his second of the game when he feathered a back-door rebound behind Fleury, who made 24 saves. NOTES: Penguins D Kris Letang spoke with reporters Thursday morning, the first time since suffering a stroke and said he will likely play hockey again, but its unclear if he will return this season. ... Paul Martin, out 4-to-6 weeks after breaking his hand in the Olympics, was scratched along with recently recalled D Simon Despres. ... Follow all the action live on TSN2 and TSN GO beginning at 8:30pm et/5:30pm pt. The Heat, who have won the last two NBA titles and lost three years ago in the Finals, took a 2-1 series lead on Saturday night with a 99-87 win. Miami is a perfect 6-0 as the home team in the postseason. LeBron James and Dwyane Wade fueled Miamis strong third quarter and Ray Allens sharp-shooting helped hold Indiana at bay in the fourth. The Heat trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half and didnt take their first lead until midway through the third, when James capped an 8-0 burst with a two-handed, fastbreak dunk for a 52-51 advantage. James and Wade combined for 22 points in the third -- the same amount as the Pacers -- to help the Heat take a 71-64 spread into the fourth. Indiana got as close as two in the final frame before Allen took over, draining all four of his 3-point tries en route to 16 points as the Heat pulled away down the stretch. "This team has proven to be resilient," Allen said of his team battling back despite trailing by double digits. "In bad situations, we pick it back up." James finished with 26 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals, while Wade added 23 points, four boards and four assists for the Heat. Allen was the only other double-digit scorer for Miami. Paul George, who suffered a concussion in the fourth quarter of Indianas 87-83 loss in Game 2, supplied 17 points and Roy Hibbert tallied 16 points for the Pacers, who had won five straight road games. David ;West chipped in 13 points, while Lance Stephenson tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds. Derek MacKenzie Jersey. Indiana took advantage of a sluggish start from Miami Saturday and stifled the Heat for much of the opening frame, forcing seven turnovers and holding the home team to 6-of-16 shooting from the floor over the first 12 minutes. The Pacers held a 21-14 lead after one and the 14 first-quarter points was a season-low for the two-time champions. With the margin at seven following a Chris Bosh triple early in the second, Luis Scola supplied back-to-back buckets to spark a 10-2 burst that Rasual Butler capped with a trey for a 37-22 cushion with 6:22 on the clock. The Heat clamped down defensively from there, holding Indiana without a field goal over the next five-plus minutes to claw their way back into the game. "We had no choice but to regather," Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra said of his team falling behind by double digits. "It was good to see us bounce back in the second quarter and show some toughness." The Heat turned a four-point deficit at the start of the second half into a seven-point cushion thanks to Wade and James. Wade opened the fourth with another trey to push the spread to 10, but George scored eight points in a 10-2 Indiana burst to pull the Pacers within 76-74. Allen caught fire from there, nailing three 3-pointers in a 3:23-span to help the Heat create a 90-79 advantage. Allens fourth triple of the frame made it 97-82 with 2:50 to play and Miami cruised the rest of the way. "Its very early in the series," Indiana head coach Frank Vogel said. "They came back, they took care of their home court. We gotta try to come out and get Game 4." Game 5 will be Wednesday night in Indianapolis. ' ' '

In Saturdays 106-103 loss to the Blazers, the home team blew a 16-point advantage and eventually won on Damian Lillards running bank shot with 11.9 seconds left. Portland led 31-19 after the first quarter and had three players score at least 20 points. Toronto was led by DeMar DeRozans 36 points and 12 assists, while Kyle Lowry and Jonas Valanciunas scored 23 and 18 points, respectively, for the Raptors, who shot 46 percent for the game. "We understand what we had to do, honestly," DeRozan said. "We understand we were down big and the only way we would get back in this game was to get stops and thats what we started doing. That was the main part. We were missing a lot of easy shots that we normally make, but we dont worry about that. The only thing we worry about is the defensive game and we picked it up in the second half." DeRozan is averaging 27.8 points in his last five games. The Raptors, who are four games ahead of Brooklyn in the Atlantic, still have to visit Sacramento and the Los Angeles Clippers on the road trip. Raptors guard Greivis Vasquez is questionable for Monday with an illness. Utah has dropped two in a row and four of its last six games, including Saturdays 102-87 setback to the Clippers. On Saturday night, Shine left AT&T Park with a souvenir game ball for his heads-up performance behind the scenes in a 5-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants. It saved Miami from giving up an early run that could have swung the momentum. Marlins manager Mike Redmond requested a review of whether Brandon Hicks touched first base on a second-inning double. The play was overturned in 2 minutes, 42 seconds, and became a putout from the pitcher to first baseman. That left Hector Sanchez on third base with two outs, and Brandon Crawford ended the inning on a deep fly to centre. "That was unbelievable. In my mind, Pat Shine won the game today," winning pitcher Tom Koehler said. "I looked at the replay to see how close it was. Second inning of the game and if youre wrong you burn your challenge in the second inning. Hes been doing a great job all year and thats why he got the game ball today when we came in from the field. San Francisco went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position and left nine on base. "Ive said this many times, when you dont hit and score runs, you look flat," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "That was the game. We couldnt knock in runs." Suspended infielder Miguel Tejada was quoted as telling ESPN Deportes he had signed a minor league contract with the Marlins pending a physical. He served 41 games of a 105-game suspension last year for testing positive for an amphetamine. Nadal, who turned 28 on Tuesday, is now 22-6 lifetime against the 32- year-old Ferrer, including a perfect 4-0 mark at Roland Garros. Ferrer upset Nadal on some clay in Monte Carlo back in April. The amazing Nadal is trying to become the first man to capture five straight French Open championships. The Murray-Monfils match was a see-saw affair, as the British star pounced on the Frenchman for a two-sets-to-love lead, only to see the 2008 French Open semifinalist Monfils turn thinggs around by stunningly taking sets three and four. Ty Summers Jersey. . After the fourth set, Murray sat in his chair and complained to the tournament referee about the darkening conditions at 9:20 p.m. local time, but it was decided the two men would play on. Murray appeared to struggle mightily with some sore legs in the fourth set against Monfils, but he showed no signs of problems in a lopsided fifth, which was played out in a mere 24 minutes as the stunned French faithful looked on. The 27-year-old Murray will appear in his second French Open semi. He missed the event last year due to injury. Nadal and Murray will meet for a 20th time on the ATP World Tour, with the mighty Spaniard leading their all-time series, 14-5, including a 5-0 record on clay. Nadal beat the two-time Grand Slam titlist Murray in a French Open semi three years ago. Fridays other semifinal will pit second-seeded former world No. 1 Novak Djokovic against 18th-seeded Ernests Gulbis, who will appear in his first-ever major semi. Djokovic will perform in his sixth French Open final four (1-4) and is 4-1 in his career versus Gulbis. The six-time major champion Djokovic was the French Open runner-up two years ago and still needs this title to complete a career Grand Slam. And if he wins the championship this week he would also reclaim the world No. 1 ranking. The 27-year-old Djokovic is a 22-time Grand Slam semifinalist. The 25-year-old Gulbis is currently riding a nine-match winning streak and already owns a pair of titles in France this season, including one in Nice just one day before the French Open commenced. Hes 13-0 on French soil for the year. Gulbis has not lost to a seeded player at a Grand Slam event since the 2010 Australian Open, compiling a 5-0 mark. ' ' '
Veteran lefty Chris Salamida gave the Winnipeg Goldeyes another strong start, while Ray Sadler had a double, a two-run homer and four RBI, as the Fish kept pace with the Gary SouthShore RailCats. Bryce Callahan Jersey Retro . With 7,029 fans looking on at Shaw Park, Salamida allowed only two runs and five hits over seven innings, while Sadler hit his 19th homer of the season, as the Fish blasted the St. Paul Saints 9-2 to even this weeks four-game series at a win apiece. The victory gave Winnipeg six wins in its last seven outings, a 53-42 record on the season and left the Fish a game and a half back of Gary in the American Association wild card hunt with five games to play. "It looked like a totally different team today," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney referring to the fact the Goldeyes were beaten 11-4 by the Saints on Tuesday night. "We got a great start from Chris, some tidy defence, nice bullpen work and some timely hitting. Thats a good recipe for success." The Goldeyes opened the scoring with four runs in the fourth, as Yurendell de Caster walked, Ryan Scoma singled, Sadler doubled home both de Caster and Scoma, Josh Mazzola beat out an infield single, Luis Alen singled home Sadler and Amos Ramon singled home Mazzola. The Fish added two more in the fifth on RBI from Mazzola and Casey Haerther and then Sadler hit his two-run bomb in the seventh to put the game away. Winnipeg added a run in the eighth as Fehlandt Lentinis fielders choice ground out scored Luis Alen from third. The Fish pounded out 12 hits. Sadler finished the game two-for-four with two runs scored and four driven in; Scoma went three-for-four with a walk and three runs scored; and Ramon was two-for-four with an RBI. Salamida, now 7-0 with a 2.01 ERA, picked up the win, while St. Paul starter Cole Nelson (5-3, 3.67 ERA) suffered the loss. "Chris is throwing the ball for us better than he has at any time in his career," said Forney. "Hes excited to pitch. Hes enjoying going out there and hes giving us some outstanding starts. And hes a tremendous athlete. He made two great defensive plays on ground balls tonight. Hes been really good in every aspect of his game." Cheap Jerseys 2020 . Austin Fyten can attest to that. The Oklahoma City forward picked up his first career two-goal game Sunday afternoon as the Barons came back to beat the Abbotsford Heat 5-4 in a shootout in American Hockey League action. Fyten hadnt scored in 14 games but the 23-year-old tied the game twice with redirections in the comeback win. "Ive been playing a lot and pretty well but things werent going my way, as far as bounces and stuff," said Fyten. "Tonight is one of those nights. I didnt even shoot it in — both goals went off my body. "If you play the right way good things will happen. I was pleased to get those — huge win for the boys." The two goals Sunday were just the fifth and sixth of the year for the Sundre, Alta. native. "Hes been great for us lately," said Oklahoma Citys Roman Horak. "Hes not afraid to go to the front of the net and do the dirty work and it pays off. He got two goals and that was a huge help from him tonight." Anton Lander scored the shootout winner, beating goalie Doug Carr low to the stick side before Barons goaltender Richard Bachman stopped Max Reinhart to clinch the win. The Barons never led in the game and needed Curtis Hamilton to tie it with just over two minutes to play in the third. "It was tough," said Fyten. "We were behind the eight ball all night. We stayed with the game plan and battled back. We got a couple greasy goals, and then Hammy stepped up with a big goal. "We wanted it and just kept pushing and pushing. We deserved that one." Former heat forward Horak also scored for Oklahoma City (34-28-11), which maintained the final Western Conference playoff berth, with Charlotte and Rockford now both two points back. "Its definitely one of those things where you watch whos winning and not winning," said Fyten. "Both the teams helped us out tonight with a couple losses. But its going to come down to the bitter end. We need to keep winning games and finish strong." Bachman, who has started 27 of the Barons last 30 games, made 33 saves. "Hes been keeping us in games," said Horak of Bachman. "Especially if we make the playoffs, were going to be betting on him a lot." Added Fyten: "We gave up too many shots tonight, too many PKs and stuff. But hes our most valuable player for sure. Hes been unreal for us and hopefully he can keep with it and help us down the stretch." In the other crease, Carrr was making his first AHL appearance, stopping 22 shots for Abbotsford (40-25-8). Matt Szymanski Jersey Retro. . "He made some huge saves," said Heat head coach Troy Ward, who gave team MVP Joni Ortio the day off. "I thought the last one there he wants back, the tying goal. But hes adjusting to a higher level, the release is quicker . . . but I thought he did a nice job for us today." Brett Kulak recorded his first career AHL goal, while Ben Street, Brett Olson and Reinhart also scored for the Heat, who have clinched a playoff spot but ended their chances of catching Chicago for fourth place. Lander tested Carr early, stealing the puck in the slot, but the Heat netminder made a nifty glove save to keep the game scoreless. Olson opened the scoring at 10:45 on the power play. Derek Smiths point shot ricocheted off Sven Baertschis skate right to Olson at the side of the net and he quickly backhanded it past Bachman for his 17th of the year. Fyten tied the game at 5:56 of the second period, redirecting Brad Hunts point shot. But Kulak put the Heat back in the lead a little more than two minutes later. Ben Hanowski, playing his first game since being reassigned by Calgary, made a great play, drawing Bachman to the left right post before setting up Kulaks one-timer from the hash marks. "I didnt know (Hanowski) saw me back there, but he threw a really nice pass — I guess thats why hes been in the NHL for the past month," said Kulak. "He made it really easy for me to just tap it in there. Obviously I cant enjoy it as much as I would have if we won the game, but its still a special feeling." Streets team-leading 28th of the season doubled the lead at 14:31. Smith blocked a clearing attempt at the blue-line and quickly put a shot on net, where Street deflected it past the left pad of Bachman. Horak drew the Barons back within one with a power-play goal at 17:21. First he drew a tripping penalty when he was hauled down by Smith on a partial breakaway. Then he scored his 22nd of the year, finishing off a give-and-go with Steve Pinizzotto to beat Carr glove side. Fyten tied the game again when Oscar Klefboms rebound bounced off Fyten at the side of the net at 6:10 of the third. However, Fyten took a slashing penalty a minute later and the Heat made him pay. Reinhart tapped in a feed from Street at 8:27 for his 20th of the year. Oklahoma City once again evened the game with just over two minutes to go. Hamilton took a pass from Will Acton in the slot and wired a wrist shot past Carrs glove. ' ' '
WASHINGTON - For the second time in three years, the Washington Nationals won the most games in the NL — and then quickly exited from the playoffs. Yeezy 700 Mauve Outlet . Now comes an off-season of questions about manager Matt Williams decisions and a handful of key roster choices, including what to do about Ryan Zimmerman, whether to sign Jordan Zimmermann and Ian Desmond to long-term deals, and how to upgrade an offence that fell flat in October. The window is not closed, Desmond said after the Nationals season ended Tuesday night with a 3-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants in Game 4 of their NL Division Series, but it is closing. At 96-66 under rookie skipper Williams, Washington finished first in the NL East by 17 games and had the best record in the league. Its pitching staff led the majors with a 3.03 ERA, as Zimmermann, who threw a no-hitter in the regular-season finale, teamed with Stephen Strasburg, Doug Fister, Gio Gonzalez and Tanner Roark to form as formidable rotation. The lineup lacked superstar numbers, but it managed to finish third in the NL in runs. Then came the post-season. Just like in 2012, when it won 98 games, a top-seeded Nationals club lost to a wild-card opponent in the NLDS. The pitching was fine — Washington and San Francisco each scored nine runs in the series — although Williams use of his relievers will provide fodder for months worth of talk-radio segments. Should he have lifted Zimmermann with two outs in the ninth in Game 2? Should he have gone through Game 4 without ever using Tyler Clippard, Drew Storen, Craig Stammen or an available Strasburg? Should he have picked one of those pitchers for the pivotal seventh inning, when the Giants took the lead for good, instead of Matt Thornton and rookie Aaron Barrett, whose wild pitch let the go-ahead run score? Those are our seventh-inning guys, Williams said. Thats how we set this up. The biggest problem of all in the playoffs, though, was the lack of runs. The only batters who produced against the Giants were left fielder Bryce Harper and Anthony Rendon, who replaced Zimmerman as the teams third baseman in 2014. Rendon batted .400 in the NLDS. Harper hit .368 with three homers and four RBIs, which might raise an additional second-guess: Why was he batting sixth? The No. 3-4 hitters, right fielder Jayson Werth and 34-year-old first baseman Adam LaRoche, were particularly off. They went a combined 2 for 35 (a .057 average) with a pair of singles and nine strikeouts. They were hardly alone, though. The No. 1, 5 and 7 hitters — centre fielder Denard Span, shortstop Desmond and catcher Wilson Ramos — were 7 for 54 (.130) with 15 strikeouts, zero extra-base hits and zero RBIs. Its just frustrating to get to this point and not play to our capabilities, Span said. This will stick with me the whole off-season. When the Nationals eventually gather in Florida for spring training in February, the focus will be squarely on why a club so successful in the regular season hasnt been able to follow that up in the post-season. LaRoche might be gone, perhaps replaced at first base by Zimmerman. Second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera, a trade-deadline pickup, can become a free agent, and deposed closer Rafael Soriano could be gone, too. As things stand now, the Nationals have a contract option to keep Span for next season, while Zimmermann and Desmond can become free agents after the 2015 season. From then on, it was another professional job for the three-time All-Star. Haren pitched into the seventh inning and hit a tiebreaking three-run double, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 6-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night. "I was scuffling out of the gate, and its been the same way for a long time now," Haren said. "I havent been coming out that crisp out of the bullpen, but I felt really good today and my stuff was there." Dee Gordon hit a rare home run for the Dodgers, who are 10-3 against the Diamondbacks and 27-30 against everyone else. With six games left between the NL West rivals, this is the earliest the Dodgers have ever clinched a season series with Arizona. They began the year by sweeping a two-game set in Sydney, Australia. "We thought wed be doing a lot better against everybody, not just these guys," Arizona catcher Miguel Montero said. "Unfortunately, were not doing good against anybody. So weve just got to pick it up and be a better team the rest of the way." Haren (7-4) allowed three runs and eight hits, including a one-out single in the seventh by pinch-hitter Jordan Pacheco that chased the former Diamondbacks right-hander. Haren, coming off a 6-2 victory last Monday at Cincinnati, has won back-to-back starts first the first time since beating Arizona by identical 8-6 scores in a span of seven days in April. Kenley Jansen got three outs for his 19th save despite giving up a leadoff homer in the ninth by Martin Prado -- his third hit of the game and 1,000th of his career. Arizona right-hander Josh Collmenter (4-4) gave up six runs and eight hits through six innings. He is winless in three starts since his three-hit shutout against the Reds on May 29. Prado gave the Diamondbacks a 3-2 lead with an RBI single in the fourth, but the Dodgers responded with four runs in the bottom half. Matt Kemp singled in a run and Haren drove a 1-0 pitch to right-centre field, clearing the bases as teammate Clayton Kershaw jumped for joy in the dugout. "Collmenter did good, except that one inning. But he went out and gave us six innings and just battled and competed," Montero said. "I know that Haren can hit. He can swing the bat. Hes not like normal ppitchers. Cheap Yeezy 700 Teal Blue. I dont know if it was a bad pitch or not." Haren, a 12-year veteran with 71 hits and a .209 career batting average, had one RBI in 26 at-bats over his 13 previous starts this season. "I got into a good count and was looking to go the other way, and I got a pitch that I could handle," Haren said. "I used to be a really good hitter, and Im not as good now as I once was. But I put a good swing on that one and the bullpen made it hold up." The damage could have been worse for Collmenter had Goldschmidt not robbed Andre Ethier of at least a double three batters earlier with a diving stop toward the first-base line and toss to Collmenter for the out. Goldschmidts 14th homer came after a leadoff double by Didi Gregorius. Haren has allowed at least one homer in seven consecutive starts. His longest such streak was 10 starts in 2012 with the Angels. "I just got burned with a cutter on Gregorius, and I hung the cutter again to Goldschmidt and made a really bad pitch," Haren said. "But after that, I settled in and got some ground balls." The Dodgers tied it in the fourth on a two-run shot by Gordon, who turned on an 0-1 pitch and drove it into the first row of seats in the right-field corner. It was the second homer this season for the second baseman, and just his fourth in 874 big league at-bats to that point. NOTES: Arizona LHP Joe Thatcher pitched a scoreless eighth, extending his streak against the Dodgers without allowing an earned run to 36 innings and 21 2-3 innings. The only reliever in history with a longer streak against one team without giving up an earned run was Troy Percival, who had 39 in a row against Minnesota spanning 40 innings. ... The Dodgers placed utilityman Chone Figgins on the 15-day disabled list because of a left quad strain and recalled INF Carlos Triunfel from Triple-A Albuquerque. ... The Dodgers were well-represented at Saturdays memorial service for Bob Welch in Scottsdale, Arizona. Leading up to SportsCentres Year In Review on Christmas Eve, TSN and TSN. Paul Goldschmidt .ca look back at each of the Top 10 stories of 2013. Today, we look back at one of the biggest comebacks - or collapses - in National Hockey League history: Game 7 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series between the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs. When Nazem Kadri scored at the 5:29 mark of the third period to increase the Toronto Maple Leafs Game 7 lead over the Boston Bruins to 4-1, it sent a city and long-suffering fan base into rapture. The area outside of the Air Canada Centre - dubbed Maple Leafs Square - was packed with fans that were celebrating not only participating in their first playoff series in nine years, but possibly the first step towards breaking a Stanley Cup drought that has plagued them since 1967. And there was a lot of reason for celebration. After trailing in the series 3-1, the Leafs fought back against elimination to capture a pair of 2-1 victories to force the deciding Game 7. Head coach Randy Carlyle, who took over from the fired Ron Wilson late in the previous season, was responsible for turning the team around and propelling them into their first playoff series since 2004. After many close (and not-so-close) misses, the team was finally able to hold things together - albeit in a lockout shortened season - to finish the job and qualify for the postseason. While most pre-season predictions had the Leafs once again on the outside looking in, solid campaigns from players like Phil Kessel, Kadri, James van Riemsdyk and James Reimer helped the team to overcome those odds. Unfortunately for Leafs Nation, the highly-improbable happened with 11 minutes left in regulation and one foot firmly planted in the second round. With dejected Boston fans slowly filing out of TD Garden, Bruins forward Nathan Horton cut the lead to two at the 9:18 mark of the third. Then came Milan Lucics goal to pull them within one. And with with less than two minutes left and goaltender Tuukka Rask on the bench for an extra attacker, Patrice Bergeron tied it up to send the game to an unlikely extra frame. Shocked yet? The best (or worst, if youre a Leaf fan) was yet to come. In overtime, the suddenly struggling Maple Leafs found themselves pinned in their own end when Bergeron intercepted a clearing attempt and fired the puck past a sprawling Reimer to complete the comeback and send TD Garden into a wild celebration. The Bruins became the first team in NHL history to win a Game 7 after trailing by three goals in the third period. And it came at the expense of a Leafs team that - just a half-hour earlier - was already printing up tickets for Round 2. It was a year of progress for a Maple Leafs franchise that had been mired in the non-playoff wilderness for almost a decade. But on this night, all those fans outside the Air Canada Centre (not to mention watching at home) were left with was the image of Reimer lying face down in the crease with the puck just out of his reach. PAUL, Minn. CHICAGO -- Devin Mesoraco was hit by a pitch twice, in addition to the usual nicks that go along with being a catcher. He had a bag of ice on his right wrist and another on his left knee when he sat down for a well-deserved postgame meal. One sweet swing and another big win, and it was easy to forget about one painful night. Mesoraco homered for the fourth straight game, connecting for a two-out grand slam in Cincinnatis five-run ninth, and the Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 6-1 on Monday for their third straight win. "Youre going to get beat up back there," said Mesoraco, shrugging off all the bumps and bruises. "Thats why I get more days off than everybody else." Mesoraco drove a 1-0 pitch from Hector Rondon (1-2) into the basket in left-centre for his 13th homer. It was his second grand slam of the season and No. 3 of his career. Billy Hamilton had a tiebreaking RBI single earlier in the inning as Cincinnati won for the sixth time in seven games to move above .500 for the first time this season at 38-37. The winning sequence started when Chris Heisey reached on a pinch-hit single with two outs and no one on base, snapping an 0-for-16 rut. "It was all set up by Chris Heisey fighting his way into that soft single and stealing second base," Reds manager Bryan Price said. It was the first homer allowed by Rondon since Aug. 1. "Not the way you kind of draw it out. We tried to let him work his way through it," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said. "Obviously it didnt work out." Jonathan Broxton (3-0) pitched a perfect eighth and Logan Ondrusek got three outs, helping the Reds improve to 30-11 against the Cubs over the last three seasons. Anthony Rizzo hit his 16th homer for the Cubs, who have lost three in a row. Jeff Samardzija struck out seven while pitching six innings of one-run ball. Rizzo reached on a leadoff single before Starlin Castro doubled into the left field corner, putting runners on second and third. Alfredo Simon then retired three straight to preserve Cincinnatis 1-0 lead. Luis Valbuena flied out to medium right field, Welington Castillo hit a comebacker to the mound and Ryan Sweeney lined out to left. "I just tried to make my pitches the best I can, and everything was good," Simon said. The Cubs also wasted a leadoff double by Barney in the third. Samardzija broke his bat over his left knee after he popped up a sacrifice attempt. Simon allowed one run and five hits in seven innings. He struck out five and walked one. Frazier finished with three hits and Mesoraco reached five times. He also walked twice before he connected in the ninth. "I felt good the first time that I was here. Michael Lumb believes Alex Hales will be out to silence his critics when Nottinghamshire take on Yorkshire in the Specsavers County Championship this weekend, live on Sky Sports. Air Force 1 Online . Hales, who has impressed at international level in limited-overs cricket, was given his chance in the Test arena for Englands tour of South Africa over the winter and while Alastair Cooks side emerged victorious, the Nottinghamshire batsman struggled. However, Lumb, a team-mate of Hales at Trent Bridge, is confident the 27-year-old has what it takes to succeed at Test level and is backing him to provide a reminder of his ability in the build up to Englands first Test of the summer against Sri Lanka next month. Hes been great, he came to Old Trafford [during Nottinghamshires Championship game with Lancashire] for a couple of days and had a couple of hits so I know hes looking forward to getting going and silencing some of the critics he had over the winter, Lumb told Sky Sports. He is raring to go and wanting to show the critics and other people that hes world class and hell be working hard to keep his place in the Test team and play the first game. He helps out the younger bowlers and hes a leading influence in the field so to have him in these opening games, hopefully he can find some form and help us to win some games as well. One of those younger bowlers sure to benefit from playing alongside the England seamer is Jake Ball. The 25-year-old has enjoyed a fine start to the season and Lumb has high hopes for the England Lions quick.Jakes had a great start, said the 36-year-old. He had a good winter with the Lions, I think he impressed with them, and hes come back and got out of the blocks really well.Hes put on a bit of pace, hes bowling quick and hes a good lad. Theres big things for him in the future, hes started really well and hopefully thatll continue for a while. Jake Ball has started the season well for Nottinghamshire However, while Ball has begun the season in fine style, it has been an indifferent beginning to the 2016 campaign for Notts as a whole - victory over Surrey was followed by defeat at newly-promoted Lancashire. Lumb though, is not overly concerned.Obviously, we got out of the blocks really well, winning the first game, we played some good cricket and then unfortunately we went to Lancashire and got outplayed there, he admitted. It just shows the rollercoaster of Championship cricket, we were on a bit of a high and then you go and get beaten. Theres stuff that we can still work on, which is good.Everyone says the same things early on: We want to win the Championship and this and that but I think this year were more about just doing our little process, getting our basics right and if we look after those things hopefully results will come for us in the end.Division One is very strong, there are some strong sides knocking around and so, for us, its just taking each game as it comes and as long as we stick to our basics and our game plans then hopefully thatll take care of itself. Michael Lumb admits Notts were outplayed by Lancashire in their last outing The forthcoming game with Yorkshire, perhaps more than most, shows the strength of the top flight this season with both teams boasting numerous players who have performed well consistently in recent years and thats before you even get to England regulars such as Broad, Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root, all of whom are expected to play. You look at the two sides on paper and its almost like a Test match so the boys are up for it, said Lumb, who spent the early part of his career at Headingley. All the pressures on Yorkshire and were just trying to knock them off. Its exciting to be part of and thats what you want in these County Championship games, strong games, strong competitions. Were up for it, theyll be favourites, well just go out and enjoy the game and try and get one over on them. You can watch Nottinghamshire take on Yorkshire in County Championship Division One live on Sky Sports 2 HD. Sunrise, FL (SportsNetwork. Curry 3 Outlet .com) - Jimmy Hayes scored the game-winning goal in the third period to lead the Florida Panthers in a 3-2 win over the Ottawa Senators on Friday. Dylan Olsen and Sean Bergenheim also scored for the Panthers, who have won their past two. Al Montoya stopped 22 shots for the win. Chris Neil had a goal and an assist and Cody Ceci scored for the Senators, who have lost three of four. Craig Anderson allowed all three goals on 46 shots in the loss. With the score tied in the third, Florida went on top at 7:31 as Vincent Trocheck skated down the left wing while holding off a checker and one-handed the puck over to the front where Hayes pushed it in for his fifth of the season. Montoya didnt need to do much to make the lead hold, as Ottawa managed just four shots in the final 20 minutes. Ottawa took the initial lead in the game at 5:04 of the first as Neil found himself all alone with the puck in front and swept it in for his fourth of the season. It took Florida just 47 seconds to tie the game, though, when Olsens big wrister from the slot off a rebound found the back of the net. The only goal of the second went to the Senators when Cecis wrister from the right wing went in for his first of the season. Florida tied the game 34 seconds into the third as Bergenheim scored on a wrister with a knee on the ice at the left circle for his third of the season. Rosberg topped Hamilton for the pole with a lap in 1 minute, 10.023 seconds, which was only 0.033 seconds quicker than Hamiltons lap. Rosberg also broke the track qualifying record time of 1:10.646 here at the Interlagos circuit, set by Brazilian Rubens Barrichello in 2004. Heading into Sundays 71-lap Brazilian GP -- the penultimate race of the season -- Rosberg trails Hamilton in the world championship standings by 24 points. Hamilton has won the last five grand prix -- Italy, Singapore, Japan, Russia and the United States. Rosberg has been perfect this weekend in Brazil. He topped the time charts in the first two practice sessions, held on Friday, and again in final practice, which ran prior to qualifying. Rosberg was fastest in all three rounds of qualifying. Perfect job only if it works out (Sunday), Rosberg said. Up to now, of course, its been going well. This is the best place to be for tomorrow. But of course, I need to make it happen in the race, unlike Austin (U.S. Grand Prix), for example. In Austin last Sunday, Rosberg started on the pole, but Hamilton passed him for the lead just before the halfway point and went on to victory. A total of 75 points are up for grabs inn the last two races. Curry 1 Shoes Online. The winner of the Brazilian GP will receive 25 points, while the winner of the Nov. 23 season- ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will collect 50. Abu Dhabi will award double the amount of points for drivers and teams. This is the 11th time this season that Mercedes has started 1-2 in a grand prix. Qualifying was great fun, and Nico did a great lap, Hamilton said. I lost a little bit of timing in turn 10 (during final lap) and perhaps a little bit in turn 1. Thats what qualifying is all about, and it should always be that kind of gap, being that close. So it was really exciting, and I hope people enjoyed it. Williams Felipe Massa, a Brazilian, qualified third in front of his home crowd with a lap in 1:10.247. Its very emotional to be here in Brazil and to have a competitive car, starting in the top-three, Massa said. Massas teammate, Valtteri Bottas, took the fourth spot, followed by Jenson Button from McLaren and Red Bulls Sebastian Vettel, the four-time F1 world champion and winner of last years Brazilian GP. McLarens Kevin Magnussen qualified seventh, while Fernando Alonso from Ferrari, Red Bulls Daniel Ricciardo and Alonsos teammate, Kim Raikkonen, completed the top-10. For the second grand prix in a row, the field will feature 18 cars instead of 22 since Caterham and Marussia are both missing the race due to their current financial issues. Marussia ceased its operations earlier this week. ' ' '
When Brett Lawrie arrived with the Blue Jays in 2011, he looked even at age 21 to have the raw potential to become one of the franchises greats. Elvis Dumervil Jersey . In a 43-game stint, he batted .293 with nine homers and 25 runs batted in with a .953 OPS. He played spectacular defence and seemed to have a skill for pumping up his teammates and electrifying the crowd. You had to ask yourself how Milwaukee let him get away in that trade for right hander Shaun Marcum? But in the last two seasons, Lawrie has gone through some growing pains. Hes had injury problems, some awkward in-game moments, such as throwing a batting helmat in the direction of an ump, and the berating of a teammate for a perceived miscue on the bases. (Lawrie was wrong). On top of that his production has dropped off, to the point where some have wondered if that blaze of glory in his first stint with the club was a fluke or a flash in the pan. The thing to remember is, Brett Lawrie is only 24. Skipper John Gibbons suggested this week that Bretts peak performance years could still be a couple of seasons away. If you go by a couple of third basemen from the Blue Jays past, Gibbons may well be right. Kelly Gruber spent nine years with the Jays, hitting .259 with 114 homers, 439 runs batted in and 80 stolen bases. He was stolen away from Cleveland in the Rule 5 draft and spent his first couple of years as a Jack-of-all-trades utility man before becoming the primary third baseman in 1987. At age 24 for the Jays he hit just .196 with five homers and 15 runs batted in. It took until 1990 for him to have a star impact season. At 28 years old, he hit .274 with 31 homers and 118 RBIs. Gruber was still the starting third sacker for a division title run in 1991 and for the Jays first World Series victory over Atlanta in 1992. Ed Sprague offers up another example of a player who peaked in his late 20s. Sprague was the Jays regular third baseman for six seasons. After Gruber was moved to the Angels, Sprague took over at third in 1993 at 26. He hit .260 with 12 homers and 73 runs batted in and was a key member of the Jays second straight World Series victory over the Phillies in 1993. Still he didnt have his first really big year until he was 29, when he broke through with 36 homers and drove in 101 runs. Yes there are exceptions to the rule...guys who hit the ground running and continue to thrive practically from the moment they arrive in the Majors. Two of those kind of guys enjoyed brief stints with the Blue Jays in the last decade. Troy Glaus came over from the Diamondbacks along with Sergio Santos in a deal for right hander Miguel Batista and infielder Orlando Hudson. Glaus played third for the Jays for two seasons in 2006 and 2007. As a 22-year-old with his original club the Angels, he hit .240 with 29 homers and 79 runs batted in. At 24 with the Halos, he upped his power numbers to 41 homers and 108 runs batted in. Glaus had a good year with the Jays in 06, but his numbers fell off a bit in 2007, and he ultimately asked for a trade since the artificial turf at Rogers Centre was playing havoc with his back. The Jays dealt Glaus to St. Louis for another standout third baseman in Scott Rolen, who had had a falling out with Cards manager Tony LaRussa. As a 22-year-old with his original club the Phillies, Rolen - arguably the best defensive third baseman the Jays have ever had - hit .283 with 21 homers and 92 runs batted in. Rolen only spent one season with the Jays, at age 33 before asking for a trade to the U.S. midwest to be closer to his family. He wound up going to Cincinnati in a deal that saw the Jays land two pitchers, Zach Stewart and Josh Roenicke and a guy named Edwin Encarnacion. The point of all this is, Lawrie is still young enough to take off the way Rolen and Glaus did, or he may take a little longer like Gruber or Sprague. If you want to pipe dream a bit, consider Royals legendary Hall of Famer George Brett. At 24 he batted .312 with 22 homers and 88 runs batted in. The bottom line on Lawrie is, with the defence he plays, and the infectious hustle he plays with, the Blue Jays will be very patient with him indeed. The real Brett Lawrie could even emerge this season, if only he can stay healthy. Spring Roots The Blue Jays may not be leaving their spring training home in Dunedin after all. About a year ago a story first surfaced that the Houston Astros were talking with the Jays about teaming up with them on a new two-team state of the art facility in Palm Beach County on Floridas east coast. The Astros lease with Kissimmee, Florida runs through 2016, so the target date for moving obviously would have been 2017. However a local group of citizens didnt want any part of having this type of complex in their area and threatened a lawsuit. So now the Astros are looking elsewhere in Palm Beach County and are now talking with the Washington Nationals about being their potential partners. Priest Holmes Jersey . "Im proud, obviously. Staal has missed the Hurricanes first 35 games after suffering a broken right fibula in the clubs second preseason game. He finally returned to the ice in early December and Carolina coach Bill Peters said on Sunday that he would be shocked if Staal did not play tonight. The 26-year-old Staal is set to finally kick off his third campaign with the Hurricanes since being acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins and he posted 15 goals with 25 assists in 82 games last season. The first bit is always tough, watching your team when youre out, especially right at the beginning of the season when you dont get in a game, Staal said on Carolinas website. The initial shock sucks, but then its just putting your mind to getting back and focusing on that. Carolinas offense could certainly use the former first-round pick as the club ranks 29th out of 30 teams with just 2.00 goals per game. The Hurricanes have scored more than two goals only once in their last 13 games, so it comes as no surprise that they have lost nine of 11. The Canes were held under that mark again on Saturday, losing 2-1 to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Andrej Sekera had the goal and Cam Ward took another tough-luck loss despite 36 saves. You have too score to win and we just having a hard time generating enough offense to win, Carolina forward Eric Staal said. Jaleel Scott Jersey. Against good teams its that one play or one goal that you need. For us, its tough finding that. Ward has a solid 2.42 goals against average and .913 save percentage in 24 games this season, but is just 9-13-2. He is 15-9-3 in his career versus Montreal with a 2.80 GAA and .910 save percentage. The Canadiens play the second of five straight on the road tonight and are in action for the first time since a 3-1 win over the New York Islanders last Tuesday. Carey Price ended with 37 saves, while Andrei Markov and Brendan Gallagher had second-period goals to erase a slow start for the club. David Desharnais added a third-period marker to seal the outcome. We didnt change anything system-wise, said Gallagher. I think we just started competing better. Markov, playing in his 800th career game, extended his point streak to five straight games while helping lead the Habs to their fifth victory in six games. The defenseman has a pair of goals and four assists over his run. Montreal will visit the Florida Panthers on Tuesday and Price is expected to start tonight. He is 11-5-2 with a 2.27 GAA and .930 save percentage in his career versus Carolina. The Canadiens have won three straight over the Hurricanes and are 6-0-1 in the previous seven meetings. ' ' '
WASHINGTON - Forgive Washington Nationals owner Mark Lerner if he got swept up in the scene. Cheap Air Max 270 Australia .Speaking after a news conference Wednesday to announce the addition — via a $210 million, seven-year contract — of 2013 AL Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer, Lerner was thinking big thoughts. After all, the clubs starting rotation, at least for the moment, also includes Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmermann, Doug Fister and Gio Gonzalez. If they all stay healthy, began Lerner, whose father, Ted, is the teams principal owner, I guess its a possibility we may give up the fewest runs in National League history during a 162-game schedule, which is amazing.Let the speculation begin, then.Who will start on opening day, an honour thats gone to Strasburg the past three years? How good could this staff be?As it is, in 2014, Washingtons starters led the majors with a 3.04 ERA.How far can those pitchers take the Nationals, who won the NL East in 2012 and again last season before bowing out in Washingtons opening playoff series each time? And, perhaps most intriguingly, will general manager Mike Rizzo keep that group intact? Or will he wind up trading someone, perhaps Zimmermann or Fister, who can both become free agents after next season?Until those last two questions are answered, Rizzo certainly shares Lerners enthusiasm for the current collection of arms.Well stack our rotation up with anybodys in our division, our league and maybe in baseball, Rizzo said, and compete against them.Of course, things dont always shape up on the field the way they do during the off-season.The terrific Atlanta Braves group that included three Hall of Famers in Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and John Smoltz wound up with only one World Series championship. Thats one more than the Philadelphia Phillies won after assembling Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels and Roy Oswalt.Still, if thats the discussion connected to the Nationals now, it represents a sea change from where this franchise stood a half-dozen years ago.It was noteworthy to hear the word winning over and over Wednesday at Nationals Park, where the scoreboard displayed a Welcome to D.C. greeting for Scherzer and his wife, and the diamond was covered by the afternoons dusting of snow. This is a club that lost 100 games in both 2008 and 2009 and found it difficult to attract top talent in free agency, but the perception has changed.Theres no doubt about it, Rizzo said. Weve got a lot of good baseball people around here. Weve got a lot of good professionals. The selling portion of it from five years ago to today is night and day. We certainly have no problem with players wanting to be Washington Nationals.Asked what reasons led him to sign with Washington, Scherzer replied, One: winning. I think this team is capable of winning and winning a lot. When you look at the near term and long term, this is an organization you want to be a part of.The size of the contract probably didnt hurt, either. The 30-year-old Scherzer, who became a free agent after spending the past five seasons with the Detroit Tigers, received the most guaranteed dollars for a right-handed pitcher in big league history.I dont play this game for money, said Scherzer, who was 18-5 with a 3.15 ERA in 2014, a year after going 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA, but yet at the same time, when you have an offer like that, it just makes you go, Wow.The deal includes a record $50 million signing bonus, of which $5 million is due this year and $15 million each in 2019, 2020 and 2021.The total payments of the contract are spread over 14 years, reducing the present-day value and making it palatable for the Nationals. If that didnt happen, there wouldnt have been a deal, Mark Lerner said. We had to make it work for us financially. It was really my father and Mike coming up with a creative deal.Because of the deferred money, the deal had a present-day value of $191.4 million, by Major League Baseballs calculation. It counts as $28.69 million annually for purposes of the luxury tax, which uses a different methodology.Lerner joked about Scherzer: I want to ask him for a loan. Making it even sweeter was that it came at the expense of the defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens, who bounced New England from the post-season last season. Logan Ryan had two interceptions, LeGarrette Blount scored twice and the playoff-bound Patriots breezed to a 41-7 victory Sunday, ending the Ravens four-game winning streak and diminishing their post-season hopes. The previous time these two teams met, the AFC title hung in the balance and Baltimore used a strong second half to pull out a 28-13 victory. In this one, New England took a 17-0 lead early in the second quarter and never let up behind a defence that forced four turnovers and had four sacks. The Patriots (11-4) were assured their fifth straight AFC East title before the game started when Miami lost at Buffalo. Its the 11th division crown for New England coach Bill Belichick, tied with Don Shula for most since the 1970 merger. "Happy to win the AFC East," Belichick said. "Hopefully, we can build off this game." Tom Brady completed 14 of 26 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown. He has led his team to 11 division titles, two more than any other starting quarterback in NFL history. "Theyre all special. Its hard to come by, and this teams really fought hard all year," Brady said. "Weve earned it. Eleven wins in the NFLs not easy, and to win a division titles not easy." The loss eliminated the Ravens (8-7) from contention in the AFC North and dropped them into a tie with Miami and San Diego for the final AFC wild-card slot. Baltimore closes the regular season at Cincinnati, which displaced the Ravens as division champs. "We got to go in there and win. That was going to be the case no matter what," said Harbaugh, who is in danger of missing the post-season for the first time in his six seasons with Baltimore. It was the Ravens most lopsided loss since a 37-0 defeat at Pittsburgh in 1997. Things went so bad for Baltimore that Justin Tuckers run of 33 straight field goals ended when he went wide left on a 37-yarder with 14:19 remaining. Joe Flacco went 22 for 38 for 260 yards and two interceptions for the Ravens, who fell to 6-2 at home. Wearing a brace on his left knee after being injured last week in Detroit, Flacco had difficulty escaping the unyielding pressure applied by NNew Englands defensive front. Air Max 90 Australia. "I dont think he played well," Harbaugh said. Refusing to use the brace as an excuse, Flacco said, "I would have liked to play better. The brace had nothing to do with anything." Baltimore trailed 20-0 late in the third quarter when Ray Rice was stuffed for no gain on a fourth-and-1 at the New England 4. That effectively ended any chance of a comeback. The Ravens scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Flacco with 9:21 left, enabling Baltimore to avoid its first shutout loss since 2002, against Tampa Bay. It was of very little consolation to the defending champs. "Its a tough pill to swallow," safety James Ihedigbo said. "Definitely a frustrating loss." New England scored on a 7-yard run by Blount with 2:05 to go to make it 27-7, then added another touchdown when an errant snap eluded Ravens backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor and Chandler Jones recovered the ball in the end zone. Tavon Wilson capped the scoring with a 74-yard interception return with 40 seconds remaining. Baltimores previous three games were decided by three points or fewer, but it became evident early that this one would not be close. New England went up 7-0 on its second possession. A 34-yard pass interference penalty against Jimmy Smith put the ball at the Baltimore 1 before Blount bulled into the end zone. Three plays later, Flacco threw into double coverage and was intercepted by Ryan at the New England 47. After completing a 34-yard pass to Danny Amendola, Brady connected with Shane Vereen for a 4-yard score. The Patriots quickly got the ball back, and Stephen Gostkowski kicked a 45-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter to make it 17-0. Shortly after halftime, the Ravens went for it on fourth-and-3 at the New England 39 and Flacco threw an incomplete pass. Baltimores next possession ended with Ryans second interception of the game and fifth of the season. Seven plays later, Gostkowski kicked a 42-yard field goal. Flacco tried to rally the Ravens, but after a 42-yard completion to Torrey Smith produced a first down at the New England 13, he couldnt get into the end zone. DETROIT -- Chris Archer is making a concerted effort to become a better fielder on the mound, working with strength coach Kevin Barr on drills that can help him improve. "Moving my feet and fielding groundballs, and he stands like 10 feet away," Archer said. "Hes throwing them pretty hard, so Im prepared for it." Archers efforts paid off Saturday, when he made two terrific defensive plays as part of the Tampa Bay Rays 7-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers. In the sixth inning, he snagged a comebacker by J.D. Martinez and threw to first for the out, and in the eighth, Archer fell to the ground while backhanding Austin Jacksons line drive up the middle. "That ball hit him right in the glove. That was Jackson, I believe," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "He has no idea how he caught that. Thats a play when the ball catches you." The Rays broke the game open with three runs in the fifth inning and four in the sixth, and the Tigers never mounted much of a rally against Archer (5-5). The 25-year-old right-hander allowed solo homers to Alex Avila in the seventh and Martinez in the ninth. Archer called it his best performance of the season. Maddon finally pulled him with two on and one out in the ninth after 106 pitches. He allowed six hits, walked four and struck out four, falling just short of his third career complete game. "There was 25 outs that I did get, and those are the ones that Im going to focus on," Archer said. Anibal Sanchez (5-3) took a no-hitter into the fifth, but things unraveled quickly for the Detroit right-hander. He allowed seven runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings, with four walks and a strikeout. "I really like the way were swinging the bats right now," Kiermaier said. "Everyones doing their part, and were all staying positive and were having so much fun out there on the field." Matt Joyce and Evan Longoria singled to start the sixth, and after a walk to James Loney loaded the bases, Brandon Guyer brought another run home with a sacrifice fly. Forsythes RBI single made it 5-0, and Kiermaiers two-out, two-run triple off reliever Phil Coke capped the rally. Kiermaier came into the game in an 0-for-15 slump. "The thing I love about him is if he has a somewhat bad day at the plate, it never carries to the next day," Maddon said. "He doesnt carry an at-bat to the other at-bat. Its all a new experience. Every time he goes up there, its a new experience for him." Sanchez, the American League ERA champion last season, had gone 32 starts without allowing more than four earned runs. Archer allowed a homer, a single and a walk in the ninth, so Maddon brought in Grant Balfour, who struck out the final two batters in a non-save situation.
